The too-early sunset is this non-negotiable deadline for being outside. If I want to see birds, I need the help of the sun. Incidentally, the sun spent most of its time in January lingering in the sky while I was at work. Every now and then, usually towards the end of the month when daylight claims more of the day, I can fit some birdwatching in between the end of work and my children’s activities.

It’s February now. We get to claim more sunshine, bit by bit, but only because something more powerful than us allows it. There are limits to my power; I often cannot change the things I’d like to. If ideal is not available, I need to make the world better with that I can create.

Winter birdwatching isn’t warm, and sometimes there aren’t very many birds. But it can be pretty – if you’re in the habit for looking for beauty despite difficult circumstances.

Sigh. It’s so hard to find the beauty these days.
